Exponent Energy, a specialist in fast charging technology, has developed a 1 MW charger capable of fully charging electric buses in less than 15 minutes, while also offering a 3000-cycle warranty on the bus battery pack in collaboration with global battery leader BYD.
In August 2024, Exponent partnered with Veera Vahana, a key player in the bus sector, to launch the rapid-charging intercity bus, Veera Mahasamrat EV. To support this new fleet, Exponent unveiled India’s first 1 MW rapid charging technology specifically designed for electric buses.
Arun Vinayak, CEO and Co-founder of Exponent Energy expressed his thoughts on this milestone via Twitter, stating, “As a nation, we must believe in our ability to develop and control all aspects of EV technology. Historically, we have been followers in the internal combustion engine sector, and we cannot afford to repeat that with electric vehicles. There has been significant enthusiasm surrounding BYD’s 1MW charging, but we have already achieved 1MW charging capabilities right here. We are utilizing standard off-the-shelf cells, making it ten times more accessible. While BYD excels in cell material science, enabling them to achieve 10C, we need to catch up in India. I am optimistic that we will soon have an Indian cell partner.”
Founded in 2020 by former Ather executives Arun Vinayak and Sanjay Balyal, Exponent Energy has developed its battery pack (e^pack), charging station (e^pump), and charging connector (e^plug), which together facilitate a rapid 15-minute charge and provide a 3000-cycle life warranty for electric vehicles—setting a new industry standard—all while utilizing a range of cost-effective Li-ion cells.
To date, Exponent Energy has completed over 350,000 rapid charging sessions, covering more than 2 million kilometers, and has expanded its operations to five new cities: Delhi NCR, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Hyderabad.
The company has successfully raised nearly $44.6 million through Pre-series A fundingA, Series A, and Series B funding rounds, led by prominent investors including Lightspeed, Eight Roads Ventures, YourNest VC, 3one4 Capital, AdvantEdge VC, and the family office of Dr. Pawan Munjal, Chairman & CEO of Hero MotoCorp.
